The Orchard

4x5 film, Printed on Inkjet

Frame constructed with Barn Board ( in Gallery Display )

This series is an intimate study of the trees in my apple orchard. Having looked at these trees and studied them all my life, I craved a new way to view them. I wanted to focus on their many shapes and angles; the ways that the branches interacted with each other. So I started looking at them in segments, in little vignettes. I set up my 4x5 and moved it around a tree until the branch interactions were the most interesting. I also looked at the branches that were out of focus, and the softness it gave.

This way of looking, in vignettes or segments, is key not only in photography but also in life. Train yourself to take the time, while you are rushing through your days, to observe the details and appreciate life around you. Because, like these trees, they won’t always be there.
